Sorry, Sports Illustrated, but Time got it right — 2021 is the year of Simone Biles, not Tom Brady

Time Magazine has blown out Sports Illustrated in ranking its athlete of the year by a score of 45-10. Sports Illustrated decided to go with Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady as its “Sportsperson of the Year.’ It’s easy to see how they made that choice. He’s 44 years old, and still playing in the NFL — professional tackle football — at a very high level. Brady began 2021 by winning a Super Bowl in his first year with the only NFL team he’s ever played for besides the New England Patriots. It’s a one-of-a-kind performance that does deserve recognition and admiration. Simone Biles though, she’s something different. At 24 years old, she, too, is at an age past prime competition years in her sport. No one would have faulted her for deciding to pass on the 2021 Tok…

Spain’s Rodri: ‘I try to learn from Busquets but I have always been myself’

Rodrigo Hernández is fine, thanks. Sometimes the most basic question is the most important, and this feels like another of those times. It’s a short while since the army rolled into Spain’s Las Rozas training base and, hours before the European Championship got under way, administered the national team with a coronavirus vaccine he calls “indispensable”. It’s sunny, he’s smiling, and so far the Manchester City midfielder feels good. So do his teammates. Which, after the week they have had, is something.

It’s also a bit late. “Yeah, but we keep out of that really and at last it’s happened,” Rodri says, sitting in the shade, 25km north-west of Madrid and barely 10 minutes from where he grew up, preparing for his first inte…

Frank Lampard says vote of confidence does not ease pressure at Everton

Frank Lampard has said Farhad Moshiri’s vote of confidence has not alleviated pressure on his position and he and his players must take responsibility to haul Everton out of relegation danger.

The Everton owner this week claimed he retained faith in Lampard despite one win in 10 Premier League games leaving the team third from bottom. Moshiri also backed the under-fire board in his letter to the Everton Fans’ Forum, prompting several resignations from the forum and the Fan Advisory Board.

Chelsea’s Bompastor calls for WSL to help clubs in Champions League

The new Chelsea women’s manager, Sonia Bompastor, has called for the WSL fixture scheduling to be kinder to English clubs competing in the Champions League. The former Lyon manager, who took over from Emma Hayes and described herself as “so competitive and a really bad loser”, highlighted the scheduling of big league matches around the showpiece tournament’s fixtures as a key difference between the French and English leagues.

“Sometimes when you play a midweek Champions League game, you still have to play your very big game on weekends against Arsenal, Manchester City or United,” she said. “Three competitive games and this is really difficult for the players to be able to perform with not a lot of recovery between the games.”…

Lamar Jackson got Flowers along with his new deal

Lamar Jackson got paid on Thursday like no one else in NFL history, ending a months-long stalemate between the star quarterback and the Ravens. And if that wasn’t enough Baltimore gave him his Flowers too. Isn’t $185 million in guaranteed money enough recognition? Not exactly, as the Ravens used the No. 22 pick in this year’s NFL Draft to select former Boston College wide receiver Zay Flowers. Talk about the dog house to the penthouse for Baltimore’s outlook on the 2023 season in a matter of six hours. Flowers was in the top group of wide receivers in the draft and was a two-time All-American for the Eagles in 2020 and 2022. Oddly enough, the year in between is when I got to watch Flowers play live when Missouri traveled to Chestnut Hill to face BC. Dude can flat-out play. He w…

Dutch Twin Brothers Battle For Gold In Speed Skating

The Dutch own speed skating. Over the weekend, Ireen Wust won gold in the women's 3,000, they swept the podium in the men's 5,000 and today they swept the 500. This was a particularly tense set of races because identical twin brothers were jockeying for position. This is a split-screen video of the two Mulder brothers, Michel and Ronald, on their final runs of the event. Audio is from Michel's winning race, which is on the right. Older (by 10 minutes) brother Ronald looked to be in position to win gold with a final time of 1:09:46 but Michel edged him out on his final run to finish with a time of 1:09:312. Michel was just barely able to hang on thanks to countryman Jan Smeekens's final run. His time was so close, he thought he won the event and Michel Mulder thoug…

Here Are The 2014 Olympic Medals

Today at the IOC executive board meetings in St. Petersburg, the medals for the 2014 Sochi Olympics were officially unveiled. Uh, Russia? It looks like a big chunk is missing. The medals were designed by the Leo Burnett advertising agency, who beat out actual design firms and jewelers for the contract. Here's the description, from the Sochi organizers: The Sochi 2014 Olympic and Paralympic medals are unique and feature the Sochi 2014 "Patchwork Quilt" – a mosaic of national designs from the various cultures and ethnicities of the Russian Federation. The medals have been carefully crafted to depict the landscape of Sochi from the sun's rays reflecting through the snowy mountain tops onto the sandy beaches of the Black Sea coast. Each medal is 0.4 inches thick, and …

FedEx Wants All Hungover Employees At Work Tomorrow

Until those diligent slackers get the day after Super Bowl turned into a national holiday, we the working class must continue to roll into to work on Monday, somehow, some way. Don't bother calling in sick — it doesn't work. Especially if you work for FedEx. Their employees were told that any missed work on Monday must have a doctor's note or other proof. Any unexcused missed days will be investigated by this man. Here's the memo. I can't entirely read the name of the Operations Manager who distributed this, but I do believe it was Britney Spears: FedEx Delivers Super Bowl Monday Message – Be At Work Or Else [Busted Coverage]

4 NFL Teams In Need of a Franchise QB, Ranked By Desperation

data-mm-id=”_1svlmc6i2″>Imagine taking a lesson from the New York Jets, of all teams.Laugh all you want, but the Jets certainly showed just how important it is to have the right, dependable, long-term quarterback under center. After three weeks of offensive ineptitude while he recovered from mononucleosis, Sam Darnold returned to guide the New York Jets to a stunning 24-22 victory over the Dallas Cowboys. Other teams were not so lucky on Sunday. If they want to avoid continued ineptitude in the future, something might have to change and soon. Here's a list of teams that desperately need franchise quarterbacks, ranked by their level of desperation. 4. Pittsburgh Offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Randy Fichtner deserves plenty of credit for the job he's done this sea…

Big Ten Basketball a Northwestern Win Away From 1-1 Singularity

data-mm-id=”_190tkxqyg”>The Big Ten was supposed to be top-heavy this year with the best of the conference as good as any other team in the country. Half of that equation has played out early on, as Ohio State, Michigan State, Michigan, and Maryland all enjoyed time in the top five of the rankings. But the bottom half of the conference has shown to be quite formidable early on, with Penn State beating the Terrapins, Illinois rolling the Wolverines, and Minnesota shocking the Buckeyes. As a result, 12 of the conference's 14 teams are tied with a 1-1 conference record. Only Michigan State at 1-0 and Northwestern at 0-1 are separated from the field. And wouldn't you know it? The Spartans travel to Evanston on Wednesday night. It's the next conference game on the schedule. A…
